As reported in my February 15, 2013, blog posting, US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) is eliminating the paper I-94 Arrival/Departure Record (often called the I-94 card).  CBP provided an update today regarding its progress toward I-94 automation

Highlights from the announcement include:

  • CBP has submitted its automation Rule to the Federal Register.
  • The change is planned to be effective 30 days after the automation Rule appears in the Federal Register.
  • Automation of the I-94 is expected to streamline the admissions process for those who lawfully visit the U.S. because affected visitors will no longer need to complete a paper I-94 card when arriving in the U.S. by air or sea, and admission records will be “generated using traveler information already transmitted [to CBP] through electronic means”.
  • Paper I-94s will be able to be printed by accessing www.cbp.gov/I94, a website that is expected to be available 30 days after the automation Rule is published in the Federal Register.
